YouMe Lin, Consultant & Producer

Notes on Freelancing in NYC

I think my attitude of always wanting to give 200% towards everything I do is my biggest talent. I focus more on building true relationships with my clients then just earning a few quick bucks.

Hi! I'm YouMe. I moved to New York from Florida and have lived in many cities growing up such as New Orleans and Shanghai. I freelance and work as a consultant and producer for beauty, fashion, and lifestyle brands. On the side, I also model for brands that I adore and do campaign work for fun.

What brought you to NYC?
I’ve always been fascinated by the big city life since I was very little, thus I decided to go to college in the city. This is my 5th year here!

How do you feel about living in NYC?
I love how it’s truly a place filled with talented dream chasers and I feel so inspired by everyone here. Learning about people’s stories and the diverse culture are some of my absolute favorite things about the city. On the other hand, it can be a lonely place if you don’t have a good support system. New York has really taught me to put myself out there when it comes to meeting new people.

Where is your favorite part of the city?
I love the vibe in the Lower East Side. I see so many freelancers like me at coffee shops in my LES neighborhood every morning - hustling and following their passion. You can also find the best food and cafes here!

WORK & TALENT

What did you study at NYU and how did you get into the fashion industry?
I studied storytelling in social entrepreneurship at NYU - I wanted to use storytelling to support brands that have a good cause and to use stories to promote positive human interactions and behaviors.

What do you do as a consultant & producer?
As a consultant, I offer my expertise and knowledge to help brands reach their goals and solve problems. Sometimes, I would also help my clients come up with a launch or marketing strategy for their team to execute. As a producer, I produce content for brands to use on their social channels, website, ads etc. It also includes casting the models, scouting potential shot locations, putting together a production team and so forth.

What do think is your biggest talent that sets you apart from others?
I think my attitude of always wanting to give 200% towards everything I do is my biggest talent. I focus more on building true relationships with my clients then just earning a few quick bucks.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Honestly, I just love the idea of being about to CREATE and bring ideas to life. It’s wild and magical!

How do you feel about being a freelancer? Perks & challenges?
Perks include making my own schedule, having full creative control, and working only on projects that I whole-heartedly believe in. The downside of freelancing for me is maintaining a balanced life and drawing a stronger boundary between  my work and personal life. Another challenge is that the work quantity can change vastly from month to month due to the uncertain nature of freelancing.

What is one advice you would give to other girls that want to work in the fashion industry?
Be ready to put in the work and network. Most importantly, make your work enjoyable and fun.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I’m usually not someone who likes to plan too far ahead but I hope in 10 years, I would still doing what makes me happy.
