Thanks to YouTube, I see the beauty of not giving up now.
My legal name is Kelly, but many people know me as Youjin, which is my Korean name. I’m an 18-year-old Korean-American YouTuber. I’ve always been fascinated by all things media ever since I was little so I started making YouTube videos as my own form of media platform where I share my stories. As an introvert, I love my alone time, but I’ve grown to love connecting with different people through YouTube and it’s now my favorite thing to do!

WORK & TALENT
When and how did you start your Youtube channel?
I’ve been a big fan of YouTube since the day I came across it in middle school. I spent years watching videos and saw different waves of YouTube trends come and go. So in the back of my mind, I’ve always wanted to make my own channel, but I didn’t have the dedication back then to post consistently. Fast forward to my Sophomore year, I had a period of time where I was frustrated in myself for never being able to commit and do things consistently. I found myself constantly giving up on my goals and wanted something to commit to so that I can prove to myself that I’m capable of NOT quitting. I decided that YouTube was going to be my new thing. I wanted to see what would happen if I didn’t give up. Here I am almost 3 years later, I’m still making videos and I’m so glad I never gave up!
What is your vision for your channel?
I’ve had many mental breakdowns thinking about this. For the longest time, I thought I had to fit into a title such as a “beauty guru” or a “college vlogger.” Especially as a Korean-American, I didn’t know if I should be making videos for the Korean audience or for the American audience. After many mental breakdowns, I concluded that I don’t need to title myself in any way. My vision for my channel is to just keep it authentic and “me” by uploading content that I’m interested in and that I’m happy with. My goal isn’t to blow up or to make viral videos but it’s to upload videos that could be comforting to anyone out there that might need it!
How did you start gaining subscribers and social media presence?
There weren’t many YouTubers, especially YouTubers my age, doing Korean and English subtitles 2-3 years ago so I believe the subtitles in my videos helped to attract many people interested in learning English. A big portion of my viewers are from South Korea and they find my life as a student in the States pretty interesting. I don’t insert the subtitles directly onto my video because they’re basically hours of unproductive labor, but I’m thankful that I was able to build a solid fan-base to drop the subtitles and still receive support and love from my subscribers!
Your advice for aspiring Youtubers!
Don’t overthink it. Don’t plan too much. Don’t waste your time preparing and researching for your “YouTube debut.” Just start creating to experience the process for yourself! Also, never create content just for attention. Your videos should be about what you’re genuinely interested in because that’ll help you attract the right audience.
How do you find the balance between Youtube and your academics?
This was the biggest struggle. I didn’t want to give up my academics nor my consistent uploading schedule so I decided to give up a couple of hours of sleep. Other than that, I also tried my best to prioritize things so that I can make the most out of my time. I think it’s so important to learn how to take short-cuts when needed. For example, I’m not going to spend 2 hours reading through and highlighting a 15-page study-guide when I can spend 15 minutes watching a Crash Course video on YouTube.
What are you going to study in college and what is your dream job?
I’m going to be a Business major in college! I’ve grown to appreciate the business side of YouTube and I’m very excited to learn more about it. My “general” dream job is to become an entrepreneur and work for myself. I’m not sure what kind of business, but I’ll figure that out someday haha. More specifically though, I always tell my sister how fun it’d be to own a trendy gym (or a workout studio) with a cute, healthy cafe attached to it!
What do you think is your biggest talent and how do you incorporate it for your work?
I think my biggest talent is my ability to motivate myself to execute my plans. Thanks to YouTube, I see the beauty of not giving up now. I’ve grown to become pretty dedicated to whatever I commit to doing! As a YouTuber, that dedication keeps me curious to learn about the different ways I can connect with my audience and if I do find a new way, I’m pretty quick to execute it (starting my podcast as an example)
How is COVID-19 impacting your life and how are you making the most out of this situation?
I’m so blessed to say that none of my family members have been personally affected by the virus. We’re adjusting pretty well to the new ways of living, but as a class of 2020, I’m pretty disappointed that the summer of 2020 won’t be like how I imagined it to be for so many years. No graduation parties, no graduation ceremonies, no throwing our cap in the air, and all that. I’m trying to have a positive mindset about it though by practicing gratitude!

FASHION & STYLE
How would you describe your personal style?
I’m still in the process of finding my personal style because I’m always open to trying new things. But I have to admit I’m heavily influenced by the whole “model-off-duty” look. I like sticking to neutrals and simple cuts designs to keep my looks casual and comfy!
What are your views on Korean Fashion?
I’d say Korean Fashion is very fast-paced and trend-heavy. Personally, I don’t keep up with all the trends just because that’d take a lot of money and unnecessary consumption. However, with the fast-pace comes many individual designers and I love seeing a variety of brands, shopping malls, blog markets, etc.
Korean celebrity crush and/or style icon?
My two style icons are Jennie from Blackpink and Sunmi! Their looks remind me of like the NYC street styles I see on Pinterest. I like that their styles are trendy but also very classy.
What is your current favorite fashion trend?
I love the whole sweatsuit trend! Thank you to the fashion industry for making this a trend because now I feel confident and fashionable wearing my comfy clothes everywhere (even though I can’t really go outside right now).

Well I really love your passion about your job love much
I have been following Kelly since her video which had the thumbnail of “uhhh….so who am I ?”. I clicked it because it was in my recommendations and I was personally having a mental breakdown during that time. I could relate to whatever she was speaking in that vlog. That made me fall in love with her. That day itself I watched all her videos (yes even the 3 year ago ones! ) and now I feel so proud that she has grown and evolved into the person she is right now. I am really happy about her and I will support her in the years coming. I hope all her dreams come true and yes Kelly that idea of a trendy gym with a cute healthy cafe is awesome !!
Goodluck with everything you face in life and have a good time.
Loved this interview! Love your youtube content and it is so nice to see your growth. Keep inspiring many people by being yourself, much love ❣️
Yo~ Kelly, fan from Malaysia. Found this girl through my YouTube recommendation about “what in her bag” I think, and been following her since then. From YouTube to Instagram and then Podcast. As someone who not really interested in living, watching her video always fun and motivated. It also make me wonder how can someone be so motivated and productive about life, most of the times. Yaaaaaaaaaaaa~ I’m so proud of her
Love you Kelly, hope you still stay safe. I am your huge fan and I come from Vietnam. I really love your style vlogs because it actually inspires me in many aspects of my life. When I saw your post which you stayed at a hotel in Nha Trang beach, I felt pretty excited although I live in Northern Vietnam ( Nha Trang in Southern Vietnam) and I just kept the thought in my mind which is " OMG Kelly is in Vietnamm". Anyway, please stay safe and keep filming because I’ll support you unconditionally. XOXO
