Jennifer Lai, Youtuber

I hope to be able to inspire people and make them feel happier, even if it’s just a little.

Hi! I’m Jennifer, a lifestyle and fashion YouTube vlogger from New York! I’m always up for a new adventure and exploring new paths.

You grew up in NYC. What do you love the most about the city?

I love the endless diversity it offers...from people, places, and cultures. Whether you want to meet new people, try out a new cuisine, discover a new hobby, or do something out of the “norm”, this city offers and welcomes it. There’s always something new to immerse yourself into when you’re here. It feels very open-minded and non-judgemental which I admire and find refreshing.

WORK & TALENT

What did you study in school?

I majored in both Fashion Business Management and Advertising & Marketing Communications at FIT. I started off studying fashion for two years before I decided I wanted to broaden my knowledge for my career so I made the switch for my Bachelor’s.

How did you start your Youtube channel?

I actually watched YouTube in high school so since then, I’ve always had a sense of curiosity about what it would be like to create my own videos. In all honesty, I just thought it would be fun to create a channel so, here I am!

What is your vision for your channel?

Currently, I want to post content I genuinely enjoy and have fun creating. I hope to be able to inspire people and make them feel happier, even if it’s just a little. Hopefully lots more themed videos!

How did you start gaining a subscriber base?

The first time I started noticing an increase in viewers was from my BTS Inspired Outfits video. Those types of videos are my favorite to create, so I’m happy people seem to like them the most!

What advice would you give to others who want to start a Youtube channel?

Set a direction for your channel and envision how you want it to be and the type of content you’re looking to post so that once you do start, you’ll have a solid foundation for the videos you’ll be creating.

If you didn't start Youtube, what career do you think you'd have?

If not related to fashion or business, I think I could see myself pursuing something I would never have considered. I’ve always found baking and pastry arts along with specialty coffee drinks very fascinating so in an alternate universe, I’d like to open and run my own cafe!

What does your typical day look like?

I’m that person who can’t start the day unless I’ve had coffee, so that’s the first thing on my mind when I wake up. I usually check my emails and plan out what I need to do for the day at this time. I’ve been getting into bullet journaling to help me stay organized, which I find really helpful. The rest of the day, I do a lot of research and brainstorming for the type of content I want to create. I tend to spend quite some time editing videos so I like to create templates and little details beforehand that I can readily use and include in my next videos.

What are your goals for 2020?

For 2020, I’m keeping my goals really simple. I get discouraged if I can’t complete what I have planned for myself so I’m trying to take things more easily and day by day. I just want whatever I’m doing career wise or personal, to be something I find purpose in and feel passionate about. Also, more focus on self-love and self-care this year!

FASHION & STYLE

How would you describe your personal fashion style?

Casual and effortless with classic and edgy pieces.

What are your views on Korean Fashion?

It has taken over my closet in the past few years. I tend to dress according to my mood, so some days, I wear a completely different style than what I normally wear and I find that the trends and styles of K-Fashion suits me well. There are two groups it falls heavily in— edgy, urban street wear and soft, feminine, and classic. I see myself as being both those personas so fortunately, there's more K-Fashion brands emerging globally that we can have easy access to!

What is your go-to outfit?

My go-to outfit changes according to the seasons and how I’m feeling but these days I’m really loving structured oversized blazers paired with a crop tee and wide leg baggy jeans/pants with sneakers and some minimal jewelry.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

I’ve been shopping online a lot recently because not only is it much more convenient, but there’s also a wider selection. Since there’s clothing that is offered online but not found in stores, I like having the option to pick up something a little different than what you can normally find. Truthfully, I like shopping at whichever place I find has items that fit with my style but a few of my all time favorite brands include Stylenanda and ASOS!

What is a fashion trend that you are the most excited about this year?

All the leather! I think when it comes to this, it has always been a classic but for 2020, we’re seeing much more designers and brands incorporating this material into their collections.
