Fall 2020 Fashion Trends for Quarantine

By Awo Jama

While the F/W 2020 runways may have caught our attention with their dazzling patchwork ensembles, fringed hems, and astute skirt suits, many of these looks did not age well given the current pandemic-ridden state of our world. As many of us have been forced indoors due to COVID-19 restrictions, the search for multi-purpose outfits that can transition from virtual office meetings to mid-afternoon couch naps has been more pressing than ever. As avant-garde designer trends simply won’t cut it this season, below are several alternative trends that are simultaneously timely and appropriate for the homebody roles most of us have had to take on.

1. Bra Tops

While this trend may seem a bit scandalous, its versatility is unmatched. Pair a bra top with a chunky cardigan and jeans for a comfy work-from-home fit. For a chic business look, wear a stretchier bra over a button down shirt with trousers and open-toed mules.

If you’re looking for more of an experimental take on the bra top, team the staple with an oversized blazer, bermuda shorts in a matching shade, and strappy heels.

2. Knit Dresses

If you’ve always been hesitant to sacrifice comfort for style, fret no longer; the knit dress allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds. A body-con, side-slit knit maxi dress offers the perfect balance between cozy and presentable. Throw on a delicate gold necklace and hoop earrings, and you’ll be looking sharper than ever for your 9 a.m Zoom call. To transition this look from night to day, simply add on a baguette purse, lace-up stilettos, and an oversized leather jacket. For stay-at-home days, opt for a rolled-neck sweater dress or an oversized sweater vest with crew socks; pants are overrated anyways.

3. 90’s Grunge

While plaid will truly never go out of style, this season is specifically all about the punk patterns that characterize 90’s grunge. From autumnally-hued checkered pants to dark flannels, chains, and creepers, the time has come for you to bring your “Punk Outfits” Pinterest board to life through your outfits. For a subtle, stuck-in-the-house take on the grunge aesthetic, simply pair some distressed, faded-black mom jeans with a cropped ribbed white tank and your flannel of choice. Wanting to go all out? Try pairing your favorite punk band tee with a mesh undershirt, a plaid mini skirt, and all the chains your heart desires.

4. Vintage Prep

The antithesis of 90’s grunge, preppy looks from years gone by have been flooding our Instagram feeds virtually since the start of quarantine, with tennis skirts, crewnecks, and polo shirts being the standout pieces. To adopt this style for yourself, try introducing the aforementioned pieces into your closet as a sort of preppy capsule wardrobe. From there, simply pair these items with one another, wearing a tennis skirt with a cropped polo underneath an oversized graphic sweatshirt. For cooler days, swap out the tennis skirt for some loose-fitting trousers, and top the whole look off with your favorite beat-up Converse.
