Notes on Hustling in NYC

Be open and collaborative & take every opportunity as the biggest one you'll get.

Hi! My name is Brooklynn, some call me BK! I am a lover of red wine, pasta, and always up for a good time :) I was born in Vancouver, Canada, but went to school in Montreal to study Art History, and ended up doing another degree in Fashion Marketing at Parsons! I have always worked in the fashion or art industry - low key a Dutch Renaissance art nerd - and currently work at Bulletin, an amazing female-founded retail tech startup. But like every other New Yorker, I also have many side hustles, working as a freelance model, photographer, and stylist.

What brought you to NYC and how long have you been living here?

I moved here three and a half years ago to attend Parsons! And of course, after school, I never left ;)

What is your favorite thing about living in NYC, and what do you hate?

I love the energy and the constant pulse of the city! It's truly unique and by far, my favorite city in the world. Every time I travel or visit a new city, I always find myself missing New York. Honestly, there isn't anything I hate, but I do miss the beaches!

Where is your favorite part of the city?

There isn't one specific area that I love! I mean, I love where I live, Williamsburg, but I also love Lower East Side!!! They both have amazing bars and restaurants, so if I had to pick, I'd say both parts.

WORK & TALENT

How did you go from studying Art History to Fashion Marketing?

I am always looking for more ways to be creative, and for me, Art History was just another way of interpreting and experiencing art. I've found both studies to go hand and hand and compliment each other in my work as a creative.

You mentioned you are a low key Dutch Renaissance art nerd - who is your favorite artist? Are you an artist yourself?

Clara Peeters!! She was an incredible female artist who is one of the first respected female painters of her time. She changed how female painters were perceived and really created change in the world of art for women. She's a badass feminist, like myself, so I related to her and her art.

I am not a painter, but everyone is an artist in their own right.

What do you think is your biggest talent that sets you apart from others?

I wouldn't necessarily call this talent more a skill that sets me apart, but I am extremely hard working and someone who is always doing a million projects because I love the work I do and just the hustle in general. I work hard for everything I do and am continually evolving and changing - something I learned from my dad!

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

I worked at Aritzia as a Sales Associate in Vancouver! Seems like forever ago, but it was a great start to my career in fashion.

What work do you do at Bulletin?

I am the Growth Manager, so I work on the Growth team to build out both ends of our marketplace, both supply and demand. In my every day, I am engaging and connecting with both brands and retailers and helping our business grow and reach new partners.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Honestly, I love every aspect of my job! The best thing about working for a startup is you are able to wear many hats! From sales to marketing, even photoshoot styling, I've been so blessed to work and contribute to many different departments.

What was your coolest side-gig?

The coolest side job I've done is model for Abigail Vintage! I am obsessed with vintage furniture and met Abby via Instagram and just fell in love with her and her pieces. Eventually, she reached out to me and asked me to model with her vintage pieces! The photos were incredible and were featured in Clever!

What is one advice you would give to other girls that want to work in the fashion industry?

Hustle, hustle, hustle! This industry isn't easy, so you need to work hard and network as much as possible. You will meet some incredible people, so be open and collaborative, take every opportunity as the biggest one you'll get.

What is the Fall 2019 fashion trend that you are the most excited for?

More gender-neutral pieces! I love how designers are combining men's and women's shows and making everything more neutral. I love men's clothing, so I am here for it!

What is your best NYC shopping advice? Do you have a shopping rule of thumb?

Oh yes! Love this q. My best advice when buying something is if you can't imagine the piece with five other looks you currently own, then do not buy it. The only exception here is if it's a whole look then buy ;)

Where do you like to hang out in NYC?

Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Lower East Side! Anywhere they have good dirty martinis!
