Bailey McCall, Actress & Blogger

Notes on the 2 P's: Persistence & Patience

I work my butt off at everything I do. I want to be the best at any projects I take on, and I am constantly trying to become a better version of myself—in my work and in life in general!
Hi! I’m Bailey McCall. I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, but I have been living in New York City for 6 years now. I am an actress, and I predominantly do musical theatre.

What brought you to NYC?
I did my first musical in high school and absolutely fell in love. Ever since then, I had my heart set on moving to NYC to pursue a career in musical theatre. I went to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and right after I graduated, I moved here to attend a musical theatre conservatory called CAP21. And the rest is history!

From your Instagram & personal website, it looks like you're doing a lot of fun things, from blogging to singing & acting. How would you describe your career and what does it mainly entail?

Yes! As I mentioned, I am a musical theatre performer. Acting is my first love and the reason I moved to NYC. For theatre actors, this requires A LOT of time and A LOT of patience! This year I have performed in two off-Broadway shows, and I am preparing to leave town this fall for a National Tour of a Broadway show! It hasn’t been announced yet, so you will have to stay tuned for more info! :)

How did you get into acting/singing?
My freshman year of high school I was in my first musical, Crazy For You. It’s a bit of a cliche experience, but I fell in love with performing instantly. I decided then that my goal was to be on Broadway one day.

Why did you start blogging?
Fashion has always been one of my biggest loves and passions. In college, I majored in English and had hoped to work at a fashion magazine here in NYC while pursuing my dream of being an actor. I quickly realized that I couldn’t really do both, and I thought that my love for fashion would always just be something I enjoyed personally. But last year I started following a lot of bloggers that I really admired and looked up to, and I thought “maybe I should give this a go.” So I kind of just started styling outfits and taking pictures and building an Instagram feed that shared my style tips/ideas. I really wanted it to be a creative outlet for me outside of acting/singing.

What do think is your biggest talent that sets you apart from others?
I am a perfectionist, which honestly can either be used to my advantage or detriment. But if managed well, my perfectionism can be a huge asset. I have an insane work ethic, and I won’t stop until I feel like I have a fully-realized finished product.

How do you incorporate your talent for work?
I work my butt off at everything I do. I want to be the best at any projects I take on, and I am constantly trying to become a better version of myself—in my work and in life in general!

What was your childhood dream?
Broadway baby!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope to be consistently working in shows here in NYC. And I hope to have started a family by then. I would also love for my blog to open some more doors for me to work in the fashion industry. If I can be actively working in both theatre and fashion—that’s my personal heaven!

What is one advice you would give to younger women who want to get into your field?
I always say you have to stick to the two P’s: persistence and patience. This career is hard. At times, it feels nearly impossible. But if you believe in yourself and you give it your all, I truly believe that things will happen for you. So many people don’t have the stamina to keep going.

How would you describe your personal style?
Casual but with an edge.

What is your go-to outfit?
Graphic tee, my fave denim, layered necklaces, and a cool pair of sneakers
What is a favorite fashion item that you own? My Anine Bing tee!

What is your most recent fashion purchase?
A sheer tie-dye blouse from Mango that I’m obsessed with!

What is the Fall 2019 fashion trend that you are the most excited for?
Cinched suiting! I am obsessed with the silhouette of a belted oversized blazer. I fell in love with Dianne Wiest’s style in the Woody Allen film Hannah and Her Sisters last year, and this was one of my favorite looks of hers. I am SO excited it is coming back in style!

What is a styling tip that you would give to other petite girls?
Cut your pants! I trim almost all of my jeans. I find that even “short” jeans are still too long. You want it to hit right above the ankle to make your legs look longer!

Where are some of your favorite places to shop in NYC?
Soho is my biggest fashion inspiration. They pretty much have everything you could ever want. Specific stores I’m currently loving are AllSaints, TopShop, Mango, and Madewell.

What is your best NYC shopping advice?
Take it all in! You can get lots of style inspo from just window shopping! There is SO much variety here in the city, you’ll never run out of new ideas and styling tips!
