Aslin Kumdagezer, Art Director & Product Designer

Notes on "A Happy Place"

I want to take people to their happy places via my drawings. If I can take you there, even for just a moment, my art has served its purpose.

Hello, I’m an art director and product designer based in Montreal. I grew up in Istanbul with Armenian roots and Turkish culture. After years of strict French education, I started my career in fashion as an editor. 5 years in, I felt it was time to change my city as well as my point of view so I moved to Montreal and began my work as an art director. Out of the office I am possessed by procrastination, but while working I am Cartesian and live with a methodical skepticism.

I am a mood creator and an artist, I draw shapes and let the viewer interpret their own meaning.

How did you become an art director/product designer?
I think art direction came to me as a result of years of visual, cultural and academic infusion. I curate every aspect of my life, so curating and directing fine visuals and concepts was undeniably evident for me. Product design, on the other hand, I would say happened overnight. I was tasked to design a mobile app in under a month so I created a boot camp for myself to learn the software, understand the design thinking and solve any foreseeable problems. I absolutely fell in love with the process.

What do you think is your biggest talent?
I would say my intellectual curiosity as well as my ability to find and create meaning.

How do you incorporate your talent for work?
Images without meaning are just nice to look at and very easy to forget. In my day to day life, I search for meaningful relationships between brands and their audience via graphics, images and branding.

What do you like the most about your career?
Few things satisfy my inquisitive mind more than a well-formulated question or an elegant solution. My career lets me experience endless opportunities on this front, I get to learn on a daily basis and continuously discover.

What was your childhood dream?
I was struggling between the idea of being an astronaut or a belly dancer.

How do you spend your free time?
Reading all the magazines I can with a silky latte or spending my whole day in the permanent collection wing of a museum that I’ve visited a million times.

What do you wish to accomplish through your art?
I draw with a romantic feeling of being in a small town in southern Italy or France. The palette dominated by beige and terra-cotta colours and, when the night falls, some parliament blue and black comes in to the picture. My days are spent barefoot, wearing only linens... It’s my happy place. I want to take people to their happy places via my drawings. Living in fast paced urban cities we lose touch with our happy, calm and serene places. If I can take you there, even for just a moment, my art has serves its purpose.

How would you describe your style?
As a kid at school I had to wear uniforms for the full duration of my education. Back then I would do anything to tweak it; I would change the sweater or wear the same colour of skirt with different pleats and so on. As an adult I am obsessed with uniforms. Over the years I created my own uniforms that I feel confident and comfortable in. They are the core of my style. If you look at my Instagram @aslinkumdagezer you will see that I am wearing the same colours and styles repeatedly.

What is your go-to outfit?
High-waisted jeans and a marinière top! Sometimes with flats sometimes with heels.

What is your favorite piece of clothing that you own?
I will cheat for this question and respond with an accessory, a vintage Cartier Panthère watch that I got myself last year.

Do you follow fashion trends? What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
Because of my background in fashion I always follow the trends. I don’t necessarily apply them to my personal style, though! Right now I am in love with strappy sandals, linen pants, silk spaghetti strap dresses and wrap dresses.

Where do you get your fashion inspiration?
From the mid century modern era, Isabelle Adjani movies, the Gainsbourg family and Picasso, with whom I share the love of striped tops. Inspiration also comes from Instagram and Pinterest, surely, the creative force and vast selection in these medias are incomparable.

What is your most recent fashion purchase?
A duo colour silk spaghetti strap dress.

How do you organize your closet?
Right now it is in total chaos, but on a good day it would be colour coded with the same textiles and textures placed together.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
Today sustainability must be a part of one’s purchasing habits. That’s why my first and foremost go to places all second hand luxury shops. I check The real real everyday for example. I love by Far, Rouge, Sezanne and Toteme’s styles. I am also a big fan of Everlane and Reformation’s sustainable approaches as well.
