Hello! I’m Ana Tess, New Yorker working in the fashion industry. I’m doing what I love and living in the place I adore. I care about sustainability and would love to make a fashion industry stronger on this side.
How did you get started in the fashion industry?
I started with modeling at the age of 15. I was one of those girls who was reading glossy magazines early on. I also couldn’t miss a show, style.com was my go-to website, I knew all the models by name and the shows they walked on. I went to study journalism in Lomonosov MSU, one of the most prestigious schools in Russia. Then started my second fashion career at Tatler magazine by Conde Nast.
You’ve had several different jobs in fashion. Which is your favorite and why?
I just love fashion from the bottom of my heart and I can say I’m an extraordinary, artistic person. I love posing, walking the runway, dressing up myself and others, creating concepts, inventing stories, launching trends, taking photos, and so on.
What made you decide to move to NYC?
I honestly fell in love with the city when I first came here. So I always had a dream to move and work full-time here. After I graduated from school, I decided to come back to model and got my contract and work visa to NYC. Just like that.
Favorite thing about NYC?
The speedy pace of the city, rivers on both sides and ocean a few miles away, sounds of cabs, trash trucks, trains, and screaming people, crossing your way with rats at nights, music from ice-cream trucks, the most amazing rooftops, easy-going people, endless opportunities, diversity, tasty restaurants, the best deals for shopping and loyal return policy, cozy coffee shops, hurricanes and snowstorms, crazy dating stories and happy families.
How has the pandemic changed your life & work?
Everyone is wearing masks, gloves, social distancing, and doing COVID-19 tests for bigger productions. Curious to see how the fashion week will look like. I have antibodies, which makes all my clients say - WOW.
What is your biggest talent?
Finding a solution to any issue.
What keeps you inspired and motivated?
Almost everything around me! Consequently, I started to consciously choose my friends, where I live, what I read, observe, etc. I’m driven by success and if someone did something before me, then I can do it too.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself as a permanent resident in NYC, working for top-tier clients as a model, stylist/consultant, and writer. Married to the man I love, and with a child. Let’s see in 5 years if all this will come true!
Your biggest advice for someone who wants to work in the fashion industry!
Never give up, be persistent, and follow your dream.
How would you describe your personal style?
It’s pretty feminine, with a bit vintage but still young and experimental. I love dressing up and was subscribed to Rent-the-Runway before the pandemic - it's such a money-saver for shopaholics.
What clothing piece do you think every woman should have in their closet?
Invest in statement pieces like a coat, bag, shoes, perfect denim, shorts, white shirt, black turtleneck, white and black t-shirts, cool swimsuit, sunglasses, timeless dress. Basically, everything that wouldn’t be out of trend.
What is your favorite fashion trend right now? Why?
I got into bicycle shorts and short-sleeve shirts. Firstly, they are easy to wear and wash after a sweaty, humid day in NYC. Secondly, they are just such a statement summer piece - mine is white with an embellished flower pattern from Mansur Gavriel.
What is your favorite go-to summer outfit?
White tee and light-wash denim shorts.
Best styling tip?
The perfect solution for every occasion - ideally fitted denim and black turtleneck/white tee, depending on the season. Am I really conservative or just French?
